Parliament’s Portfolio

Party funding and declared donations

What registered political parties declared receiving in each financial year, who the payers were, and which of those payers are ASX-listed companies — as lodged with the Australian Electoral Commission.

How to read these figures

A return is a disclosure form lodged with the AEC. Parties lodge an annual return of what they received, paid and owed; party branches itemise the receipts above the year’s threshold; donors lodge their own return of what they gave; and candidates lodge a return after each election. Each of those is a separate form, filled in by a different person, and this page keeps them separate.

Amounts below the disclosure threshold in force for a given year are not published by the AEC and are absent from these figures. A low total means little was disclosed, not that little was received.

The funding and disclosure reform commences on 1 January 2027, introducing a $5,000 disclosure threshold, near-real-time notices and caps. Financial years from 2026-27 are lodged under that scheme and are not comparable with earlier years.

Figures are reproduced as lodged with the AEC, including amendments, and are not adjusted. The AEC republishes its bulk data as amendments are received, so a figure can change after a financial year closes.

Annual member and senator returns are lodged by a small number of parliamentarians: the whole corpus holds 52 of them. Senator returns are not yet linked to profiles here. A parliamentarian with no return has not been shown to have received nothing — most never lodge one.

What is loaded here: 2,229 party returns, 124,280 itemised receipts and 66,248 donor-declared donations, covering 1998–2025. The member layer is far thinner: 52 annual member and senator returns exist in the whole corpus, of which 40 are linked to a member page here, alongside 525 linked election returns. 363 payer or donor names lodged in these returns match an ASX listing by exact name or a human-verified alias, resolving to 363 distinct listings — matched against 4,337 listed company names we hold, which is the size of what could be matched and not a count of payers.

Party funding is not attributable to any individual parliamentarian. Money declared as given to a party, a branch or an associated entity appears here and never on a member’s page.

Party funding declared for 2024-25

Three separate measures, lodged on three different forms by different people. They are shown side by side and never added together or stacked: a party’s own return, the receipts its branches itemised, and the amounts donors declared giving it do not reconcile with one another.

Each chart shows the 25 largest of 41 party groups that lodged for 2024-25, by the measure that chart names.

Payers named in itemised receipts, 2024-25

Payers are drawn from itemised receipts declared by party branches, rolled up using the AEC's own party group. Receipts declared by associated entities, significant third parties and political campaigners that lodged no party return belong to no party group and are not counted here. Receipt types are shown separately because the source distinguishes them: a subscription or other receipt is not a donation.

Receipt types are the AEC's own: a subscription, a conference fee or another receipt is recorded separately from a donation, and the five types shown add up to the total beside them. Public funding is election funding paid under the Commonwealth Electoral Act on first-preference votes received — it is a receipt, not a donation, and it is why a public body can head a list of payers. Names appear exactly as lodged; the source is not normalised, so one organisation can appear under more than one spelling.

Amounts below the disclosure threshold in force for a given year are not published by the AEC and are absent from these figures. A low total means little was disclosed, not that little was received.

Method: every figure is a sum or a count over returns lodged with the AEC, ordered only by an amount the AEC itself published. Nothing here is a ratio, a share, a rank or a score, and no figure is adjusted for inflation or restated. Payer names are reproduced as lodged; the source is not normalised, so one organisation can appear under several spellings, and we group only spellings that normalise identically. Payers are linked to an ASX listing on an exact normalised name or a human-verified alias only — a name that collides across stock codes is left unlinked entirely.
