About this theme
Lithium is where Australian short selling is most visible. The ASX hosts the largest listed cluster of hard-rock spodumene producers in the world, and the spodumene price is set by a Chinese converter market that moves faster than mine plans do. When conversion margins compress, high-cost producers and pre-production developers lose the ability to fund themselves, and that gap between a fixed cost base and a falling received price is the short thesis in one sentence. The register itself amplifies it: several of these names carry index inclusion, deep options markets and stock lending pools large enough to support double-digit short interest for months. That same depth is why lithium produces the ASX's sharpest squeezes — a supply cut, a takeover approach or a battery-demand surprise forces crowded positions to buy back into limited liquidity.
Short positions come from official ASIC short position reports (published with a T+4 trading-day delay) joined with daily price and volume data. The chart averages the constituents reporting in each week and shades the range between the least and most shorted of them; a member with no data that week is absent from the average rather than counted as zero.
