About this theme

Uranium equities trade on a contract market almost nobody can see. Utilities buy under long-term contracts at undisclosed terms, the published spot price reflects a thin sliver of volume, and the gap between the two decides whether a restart or a greenfield development is financeable. The ASX names in this theme are mostly restarts and developers rather than steady producers, which makes them a sequence of binary events: a ramp-up rate, a permitting decision, a financing package. Short sellers concentrate around exactly those dates, and around the recurring pattern of ramp guidance being revised. The offsetting risk is that uranium sentiment moves as a bloc — a reactor policy shift, a supply disruption at a major mine, or a single utility contracting round can re-rate every name at once, regardless of where each one sits on its own timeline.

Short positions come from official ASIC short position reports (published with a T+4 trading-day delay) joined with daily price and volume data. The chart averages the constituents reporting in each week and shades the range between the least and most shorted of them; a member with no data that week is absent from the average rather than counted as zero.
