Monthly Report · August 2026
ARF lights up the tape, while TWE and PLS crash the top 10
Shorting was a touch more about covering than adding: 266 fallers versus 205 risers, with the ASX average short position at 1.48% and WoW average change at -0.00% [ref-2]. But the action was concentrated — ARF jumped from 0.54% to 3.85% (+3.31%) for a fourth straight weekly rise, while TWE (11.96%, +1.56%) and PLS (11.22%, +1.43%) arrived in the top 10 most shorted [ref-1]. At the top, DRO stayed #1 at 14.35% (-1.68%), and the crowded-exit risk remains in DMP (27.8 days-to-cover), CAR (26.3) and ELD (33.5) [ref-1].
This Month's Analysis
Arena REIT (ARF) went from background noise to front page in one month: short interest lifted from 0.54% to 3.85% (+3.31%) — and it’s now a 4-week build, not a one-off punt [ref-1]. That’s the kind of steady piling-in that usually shows up when the market thinks a “defensive” story has a soft spot.
At the top of the leaderboard, DroneShield (DRO) is still the most shorted stock on the ASX at 14.35% after a -1.68% WoW trim, with 8.4 days-to-cover keeping it in crowded-exit territory if the trade turns [ref-1]. Lotus Resources (LOT) sits #2 at 13.87% (-1.14%), and its 13-week history shows just how much air has already come out of the position (23.08% at the peak in the series) [ref-1]. The bigger story is who’s muscled into the top 10. Treasury Wine Estates (TWE) is now #6 at 11.96% (+1.56%) and marked NEW TO TOP 10 [ref-1]. Pilbara Minerals (PLS) is #7 at 11.22% (+1.43%), also NEW TO TOP 10, and it’s been a grind higher across the full 13-week run (10.30% → 11.22%) [ref-1]. Elders (ELD) rounds out the new entrants at #10 with 10.71% (+0.38%) and the longest fuse of the lot: 33.5 days-to-cover [ref-1]. If you’re scanning for squeeze mechanics rather than just headline short %, the market’s most awkward names are the liquid “quality” shorts with long days-to-cover: DMP is 12.33% short with 27.8 days-to-cover, and CAR is 12.03% short with 26.3 days-to-cover [ref-1]. Those aren’t positions you unwind politely.

Movers Analysis
The cleanest signal this month is ARF. Shorts lifted from 0.54% to 3.85% (+3.31%) and did it four weeks in a row, which reads like a campaign rather than a hedge [ref-1]. The move lands in the same window as ARF’s FY2026 reporting (Appendix 4E & financial report dated 2026-08-21) and its Edge Early Learning update dated 2026-08-10 [ref-3] [ref-4]. Next is ZIP, where shorts leaned back into the name: 7.90% → 10.61% (+2.71%) on a 2-week streak, and it’s also the most shorted stock in the Financial Services industry aggregate [ref-1] [ref-6]. That build came alongside ZIP’s FY26 annual report release (Appendix 4E) [ref-5]. AOV is the sleeper in the risers list: 2.13% → 3.91% (+1.78%) with a 3-week streak and 9.9 days-to-cover — enough crowding that any reversal would take time to clear [ref-1]. JBH also saw shorts add again (3.07% → 4.76%, +1.69%) on a 2-week streak [ref-1]. On the other side, BOE was the standout cover: 12.12% → 8.88% (-3.24%) over a 3-week streak lower [ref-1]. PWH has been a slow bleed in reverse — 6.52% → 4.16% (-2.36%) for a sixth straight weekly fall, even with 18.0 days-to-cover still sitting there as latent crowding [ref-1]. One more tell: several heavily shorted top-10 names rallied anyway. PDN closed at $11.96 (+11.36% week, +24.97% month) with 11.10% short, and PLS closed at $5.14 (+4.26% week, +20.94% month) with 11.22% short [ref-7] [ref-1]. Shorts aren’t being forced out yet. They’re choosing to stay.

At the industry level, the biggest aggregate weekly lift came from Class Pend (avg 2.33% short, WoW +0.48%) and Food, Beverage & Tobacco (avg 4.24%, WoW +0.28%) [ref-8]. Food, Beverage & Tobacco also has a clear lightning rod: TWE is the most shorted stock in that industry at 11.96% and it’s now in the ASX top 10 overall [ref-8] [ref-1]. Shorts also added at the margin in Banks (avg 1.93%, WoW +0.23%), Consumer Staples Distribution & Retail (avg 3.77%, WoW +0.19%), Software & Services (avg 1.71%, WoW +0.13%), and Financial Services (avg 1.66%, WoW +0.10%) [ref-8]. The clearest retreat was Insurance (avg 1.89%, WoW -0.39%) and Automobiles & Components (avg 4.59%, WoW -0.32%) [ref-8].
Outlook
Watch ARF next month: if the short position extends beyond 3.85% for a fifth straight weekly rise, that’s a durable bet — not a results-week trade [ref-1]. And keep DMP (27.8 days-to-cover), CAR (26.3) and ELD (33.5) on the same screen as their next major updates; those are the positions that can turn into forced buying fast if the tape keeps rising [ref-1].
