About business indicators

Business indicators describe selected parts of firms' recorded activity rather than a single measure of business health. The Australian Bureau of Statistics publishes the underlying business collections, generally on a quarterly timetable, using survey and administrative inputs that are aggregated for each jurisdiction. This page keeps the two available state series together and prints each series' own unit, frequency and adjustment because the measures should not be assumed to be interchangeable. Initial estimates can be revised when businesses provide updated returns, administrative records are refreshed, seasonal patterns are recalculated or benchmark information becomes available. Movements may also reflect industry composition and the concentration of large employers within a state. These indicators do not directly measure every small business, profitability for a particular company, confidence, insolvency risk or the value of listed shares. They describe published historical aggregates and are not a forecast, investment signal or assessment of an individual firm's prospects.
