About building approvals

Building approvals count dwellings authorised through state and territory approval systems before construction begins. The Australian Bureau of Statistics publishes the Building Approvals collection each month, drawing on permits reported by councils and other approving authorities. This topic keeps the available original state total and population-adjusted series together, so the headline count can be read beside a measure that is more comparable across differently sized jurisdictions. Monthly figures can move sharply when a large apartment project is approved. Recent periods may also be revised when authorities submit late records, classifications change, an approval is amended or updated population estimates affect the derived rate. An approval is an administrative decision, not proof that work has started, finance has settled or a completed home will reach the market. It is therefore neither a construction-completions measure nor a forecast of housing supply, prices or investment returns.
