About this ranking

This Victorian affordability comparison converts median weekly household income to an annual figure and divides each suburb's latest median house price by it. Lower ratios rank first. the suburb dataset joins Valuer-General-derived prices to ABS Census income and population, and the calculation accepts only positive prices, positive incomes and populations of at least 200. The threshold prevents missing data or very small localities from generating deceptively strong ratios. Price freshness is shown from the newest period in the Victorian response, whereas Census income comes from a slower, separate collection cycle. Price-to-income is deliberately simple: it does not incorporate mortgage rates, deposits, stamp duty, household size, debt or the spread of incomes within a suburb. It describes two suburb medians at different vintages and is neither a lending assessment nor a recommendation for an individual household.
